Born in 1943 in Benin, singer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer and song-writer Gnonnas Pedro had a long, varied and successful career in music. Developing the ‘Agbadja Moderne’ sound in the 1960s, Gnonnas Pedro updated the traditional Fon rhythm long-associated with burial ceremonies and became known as ‘Le Roi du Rhythme Agbadja’. He recorded with Charles Aznavour in 1964. With his group Pedro y Sus Panchos he channelled the West African craze for Cuban rhythms through the 60s and later had Yoruba highlife hits with his Dadjes Band. He also played with the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. A prolific songwriter and recording artist, his versatility and gift for pioneering popular trends made him a people’s favourite and some of his songs became hits across West Africa. From 1996 he performed internationally as vocalist with African salsa supergroup Africando who dedicated their album Ketakuba to him when he died in 2004.
